A sheriff's deputy was killed Thursday after a handcuffed inmate she was taking to prison overpowered her and shot her, police said. Deputy Kelly Clark was transporting inmate Michael Archuleta, 21, who had been convicted of receiving a stolen vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon, when he attacked her, state police said. Her patrol car struck a truck and Archuleta fled, forcing another motorist out of his car and taking off. He was caught soon afterward when he stopped to make a phone call at a gas station, still wearing his handcuffs and carrying the gun. Clark, 39, leaves a teen-age daughter.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- A state trooper participating in a self-defense training session was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer who forgot his gun was loaded, a prosecutor said Friday. Mark Wagner, 37, was shot once in the chest Thursday by a fellow officer at the patrol's Troop D headquarters in North Platte. The officer who shot him was told that one defensive training segment was over and he loaded his weapon, prosecutor Kent Turnbull said. After a break, officers went into another mode of training that also involved pointing their unloaded weapons, and he forgot his was loaded, he said. No charges will be filed because the shooting was an accident, Turnbull said. ``It's just a terrible tragedy, not only for Mark Wagner and his family but for the other trooper involved as well,'' Turnbull said. Turnbull declined to identify the officer, but said the State Patrol would release the name next week after its internal investigation is complete. He said the trooper knew Wagner well. ``Everybody in that room knew Mark pretty well,'' Turnbull said. ``He was friends with all of them.'' State Patrol Maj. Bryan Tuma said Thursday that Wagner, a 12-year veteran, was taking part in annual training when shot with either a Glock .40-caliber or .45-caliber semiautomatic. No civilians or officers from other departments were in the room when the shooting happened, Tuma said. Tuma said troopers are not required to wear bulletproof vests during the training. He did not think Wagner was wearing one. North Platte is about 220 miles west of Lincoln.

ENFIELD -- Sgt. Tonya Doreen Gillikin always went by the book. A man she pulled over in the early morning darkness Monday did not. Gillikin, 30, was shot and killed after stopping a pair of suspects in the robbery of a convenience store that had happened just minutes earlier. After a manhunt that lasted more than 10 hours and involved hundreds of officers, police arrested and charged two men with murder in her death. What would become the largest manhunt in the history of Halifax County began when two young men walked into a Handy Mart convenience store in neighboring Scotland Neck about 12:25 a.m. Monday. One of them flashed a 9mm handgun and took money. The two then left on foot without injuring the clerk, who saw a small silver car leaving the area. Gillikin, working her regular shift, was watching for such a car when one breezed into Enfield about 15 minutes later. She and another officer followed in separate cars and pulled it over as it approached the town limits. Remembering her training, Gillikin drew her weapon as she got out of her car, shouting at the driver to get out of his. Walk backward toward me and get down on your knees, she told him, following prescribed police procedure. As her fellow officer began to pat the suspect down, the car's passenger opened his door. Get back in the car, Gillikin shouted, again reacting by the book. But in that split second, police say, the driver, still on his knees, reached inside his jacket, pulled out a gun and started firing. Before she could pull her trigger, Gillikin was shot once in the head. The suspect jumped back in the car, still firing, with Officer Cedric Robinson shooting back. The suspect dropped a driver's license on the ground before he fled. Robinson got back to his car and sent out a desperate call, stunning the night owls who listen to local scanner traffic as a hobby. "Officer down! Officer down!" went out across the county just before 1 a.m. About 11:35 a.m., an officer spotted two men who matched the suspects' description walking across a field perhaps a mile from where the car was abandoned. He called for assistance, and officers arrested the two men on the porch of the house where they had asked to use the phone. At a news conference later, Sheriff Frazier said local law enforcement was familiar with the names of the two men arrested, Douglas Elijah Travis, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, and Lawrence Broady, 19, of Pendleton.
Officers from the Montclair Police Department are keeping vigil at a hospital today after one of their own was critically wounded at a shooting range. The veteran officer, identified as Amy Nelson, was shot in the head Wednesday night while taking part in firearms training at a shooting range in San Bernardino County, said CBS 2 News. The shooting is being investigated as an accident, said Montclair police Chief Guy Eisenbrey. "Every indication is that this was caused accidentally, possibly by a ricochet, that from the range target to the officer," Eisenbrey told CBS 2 News. The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. at the Glen Helen Regional Training Center on Institutional Road in San Bernardino County. Four officers were firing at the range when Nelson turned and fell with an obvious head injury, said CBS 2 News. Nelson was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she underwent surgery. Surgeons, who removed some bullet fragments from her brain, said the procedure went well but she is still listed in critical condition. Devore is located about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
Just to let you know about an officer wounded in the line of duty. Gresham, Oregon Police Officer David Snider was shot and wounded on March 12, 1999 at about 2115 hr. (our time). He stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic infraction. Immediately after contacting the driver, the driver pulled a small caliber handgun, firing it several times at Officer Snider from only 1-2 feet away. Officer Snider was struck one time in the chest just above his vest. Officer Snider retreated while returning fire. The suspect fled in his vehicle after the lone passenger exited the suspect vehicle. Officer Snider was able to call for assistance and hold the passenger at gunpoint until cover units arrived to help. Officer Snider was transported to the hospital and was released the following day. Additional units located the fleeing suspect and a pursuit ensued. The suspect crashed in a neighboring jurisdiction. That agency's SERT (SWAT) team responded. After an exchange of gunfire between SERT and the suspect, the wounded suspect was taken into custody. Officer Snider is a 12 year veteran officer of this agency. He is expected to make a full recovery and is eager to return to work.
With a heavy heart, I announce that a US Border Patrol Agent from the El Cajon Border Patrol Station, San Diego Sector died in the line of duty this morning. Initial reports indicate that the agent was providing transport of persons in custody for Agents on foot when the road, weakened by recent storms, gave way. The Agents vehicle plummeted approximately 1500 ft. down a steep cliff. The Agent, Stephen Sullivan and at least three persons in custody were killed. It is unknown how much time passed between the time of the accident and the time the wreckage was discovered. The area is somewhat remote and the road is narrow. There is a cliff wall on one side and a steep drop on the other. Instrumental in the rescue were our San Diego Sector Border Search, Trauma and Rescue unit (BORSTAR), Border Patrol Aviation Unit, US Coast Guard, San Diego Sheriffs and San Diego Rural Fire & Rescue.

ATLANTA -- A man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer was arrested after he fled in a patrol car, crashed the vehicle and then ran into a church where the rector subdued him during evening services, police said. Kimini Atu Archie was cornered inside the sacristy of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, moments after police said he shot Officer Russell Stalnaker, 24. Officers had stopped Archie on Wednesday evening when they found him pushing a pickup truck along a downtown street, said Lt. William Charles. An argument started and officers wrestled him to the ground. As they tried to handcuff him, Archie pulled a gun and shot Stalnaker, Charles said. The officers returned fire and Archie, 24, jumped into a police car and tried to drive away. He wrecked about a block later and fled on foot. At St. Luke's, Archie allegedly tried to steal a woman's car. When she screamed, he dropped the gun, darted inside the church and ran down the aisle in front of worshipers, said parishioner Joe Geshwiller. The church security guard gave chase along with the Rev. Spenser Simrill. ``They chased the man down the aisle while the service was going on, and he ran through a side door mistakenly into the sacristry that holds the communion sacraments,'' Geshwiller said. Simrill, who once worked as a police officer, grabbed the man and held him in a bear hug until he stopped struggling, authorities said. Archie was jailed overnight on a charge of felony murder. Police Chief Beverly Harvard said Stalnaker had been on the force for three years and was recently married. ``We've lost a family member,'' she said. ``For me, as a chief, it's almost like losing a child.''
