VICTORIA -- An RCMP officer accidentally shot while tracking a suspect remains in serious condition, but doctors are optimistic they can save the man's leg. RCMP yesterday identified the officer as Const. Tom Leonard, a 22-year veteran of the force and longtime member of the South Island RCMP Emergency Response Team. Leonard was shot when the gun of a fellow ERT member accidentally discharged early Saturday as the team was hunting a burglary suspect through heavy brush. The man was believed to be armed with a stolen rifle. Western Communities RCMP Sgt. Bruce Brown said yesterday that police are still trying to determine "exactly how the shooting occurred." Leonard has already undergone one lengthy operation to try to repair his shattered thigh bone. Brown said he'll be back in the operating room over the next several days. Other ERT members later arrested a man in connection with the search. Sean Clark, 29, is charged with theft, mischief and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.

The dark side of humanity has taken another of our brother's lives. Sacramento City Police Officer Bill Bean was the passenger officer in a patrol car during a vehicle stop. The vehicle in question stopped, then began to move again. The officer's followed, for perhaps two miles at about 35 mph until the vehicle stopped again. As the officer's began exiting their patrol car the driver of the stopped vehicle leaped out and began firing. Officer Bean was hit 5 times in the chest and once in the mouth. His vest saved him from the 5 in the chest but the head shot killed him. His partner returned fire and radioed for cover. About 200 of us arrived in seconds and established a perimeter. The shooter was captured, as well as the gun. He was a parolee who thought he was wanted by an adjacent county for robbery. The owner of the vehicle is wanted for questioning, but was not involved directly. The Officer driving was Officer Hogge, who lost his fiance last year to a line of duty motor vehicle accident responding code 3 to help another officer down. Officer Bean was 27 years old and a veteran officer. He was not married, but engaged to another officer. He played in the charity "Pig Bowl" football tournament between the Sheriff Dept and the Police Dept. Funeral services for him will be held Tuesday 2/16/99. May he rest in peace.
NEW YORK -- Four police officers had just finished putting out warning flares at the site of an overturned tractor-trailer when a car plowed into their parked patrol cars Sunday, fatally injuring one and sending three others to a hospital. The accident occurred at 5:30 a.m. on Staten Island, near the turnoff to the Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey. Hours later, authorities charged the driver, Ciardi Franklin, 27, of Perth Amboy with criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault, and driving under the influence, a police spokesman said. Officer Matthew Dziergowski, 39, was flown by helicopter to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was declared dead on arrival. The others were taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where Officer Russell Goffred, Dziergowski's partner, was in intensive care, and Officers Joseph Holt and James Krolick were being evaluated, said a hospital volunteer who declined to give her name. Officer Joseph Cavitolo, a department spokesman, said the four officers, all assigned to the 123rd precinct, had just finished dealing with the overturned truck accident and were sitting in their cruisers, parked on the shoulder, when the civilian car approached at an undetermined rate of speed. "Dziergowski saw the vehicle and tried to warn the others, but the car crashed into his patrol car, drove it into a guardrail, and then hit the second cruiser," Cavitolo said. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Dziergowski may have saved the lives of his three fellow officers. "The action that he took tragically resulted in his death, but saved the other three police officers from . . . maybe succumbing to an equal kind of fate," Giuliani said. Dziergowski was a 17-year department veteran. The other three, all in their 30s, have been police officers since the mid-1980s, he said.
