" A rookie Indiana state trooper from Fort Wayne was shot to death Saturday during a 'routine traffic stop' in the parking lot of a Decatur business, at about 7:55 pm." "Cory R. Elson, 26, was found dead near his squad car...issued to him last week." "Elson exited his vehicle with his side-arm drawn, but was met by at least 36 rounds of automatic gunfire." The suspects were in a dark green Dodge Dakota pick up truck with tinted windows...One suspect was wearing a dark flannel jacket and jeans...believed to be 5' 9" 160 - 170 lbs. in his mid 30's shoulder length hair and some facial hair maybe a slight beard. Armed with an assult type rifle. Elson had just graduated from the academy in Dec. '98 and was the roommate of Trooper Gaston (killed by the truck driver (on cocaine) on the Indiana Toll Rd.) There was no video camera in the squad...no license plate info...and no known reason (yet) why the trooper was stopping this truck. A clerk from an auto parts store saw the lights...heard the gunfire and called 9-1-1. An off duty Decatur detective had also heard the gunfire and started to follow the truck from the lot, but backed off when the driver pointed the weapon at him...the detective had his son in the car with him. Decatur is a small town about 30 mile south of my city (Ft. Wayne). In the northeast part of the state. Trooper Elson leaves behind a wife...and worked out of the Redkey State Police Post. God be with him...his wife and family...and his co-workers. God help the person who did this...for I doubt anyone else will........

"RALEIGH _ N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper D.H. "David" Dees, 31, of Elizabeth City, was killed in a traffic accident last night in Pasquotank County. The accident occurred on Trinkaloe Road (RP1146) 0.3 miles southeast of Elizabeth City. Preliminary information indicates Trooper Dees may have just begun an enforcement action when he lost control of the car and overturned at approximately 12:40 a.m. The car, an unmarked 1998 Ford Crown Victoria, came to rest upside down off of the right side of the roadway. Trooper Dees had not radioed to communications that he was involved in an enforcement response, however the emergency strobe lights on the car were activated. That indicates to investigators that he may have just begun to go after a car when he entered a left curve, ran off the right side of the road, and lost control of the car. An accident reconstruction team from the Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. Speed has not been determined at this time. The road is a two-lane, 45 mile per hour rural highway. Trooper Dees joined the Highway Patrol in 1995 and has been stationed in Elizabeth City, at Troop A District 3, his entire career. He is a native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, and a graduate of Wallace - Rose Hill High School in Wallace, North Carolina. He was an Eagle Scout and a former member of the Dare County Sheriff's Department. ORANGE -- A policewoman died Thursday night after being shot in the head and abdomen. Officer Joyce Carnegie, 38, was shot just before 9 p.m. near the South Day and Freeway Drive West, near Route 280. She was rushed to the shock-trauma unit at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-University Hospital in Newark, where she died at 9:25 p.m., said a nursing supervisor, who declined to give her name. The officer had been shot once in the head and once in the abdomen, said the nursing supervisor, who added that an autopsy will be performed. Orange police did not release information. About an hour after the shooting, a police car with its lights still flashing and its driver's-side door open sat behind police tape at the intersection. Several police cars were on the scene, near Rah-Rah's go-go bar. Essex County Prosecutor Patricia Hurt said a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who happened to be in the neighborhood discovered that Carnegie had been shot. "He noticed a police car with its lights on and no officer," she said. "He got out of the car and saw that officer down." Governor Whitman visited with the officer's mother, father, stepmother, and sister at the hospital after the shooting, said her spokesman, Pete McDonough. Whitman had been at a New Jersey Devils game in East Rutherford, but left when she heard about the shooting, he said. "The governor met with and tried to comfort the family," he said. First Assistant Prosecutor Patrick Toscano said the officer had been on the force for 4 1/2 years. He said Carnegie, who grew up in North Plainfield, was single and lived with her mother. Toscano said Carnegie may have been the first female officer killed in the line of duty in Essex County, and perhaps in the state. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. No one was in custody Thursday night. Residents of the neighborhood spoke highly of the officer. Allen Watson, 29, said, "She was the kind of cop you could talk to," adding that one time his son got into trouble and Carnegie brought the boy back to him and told him about it, rather than just haul him off to the police station. "She was a people's cop, somebody you could relate to," said Pernell Williams, 35. "She's going to be missed. She didn't deserve that." Police officers from Newark and Maplewood and state troopers were at the scene.

A Warren County Sheriff's Deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Detective Bill Weatherly, 36, was shot in the face with a shotgun between the towns of Wise and Paschall, on Paschall Staton Road. He knew that there was the potential for trouble, that is why Weatherly brought two deputies with him when he went to serve a warrant on Lawrence Attaway. Attaway was wanted for failing to appear in court on a charge of assaulting an officer. The alleged assault happened in a courtroom. "The Sheriff's Department had a warrant, and they were attempting to serve the warrant at the time," says SBI agent Melanie Thomas. The SBI is still investigating exactly how the situation transpired. But police say that when Weatherly approached Attaway's house, he was hit with a shotgun blast to the face. "He went to apprehend the suspect, and he had the warrant with him at that time in the Wise community," says Sheriff Johnny Williams with the Warren County Sheriff's Department. "He was shot and killed. We don't have a motive, other than that he had a search warrant." Backup was called and after a brief standoff, Attaway surrendered. Weatherly's death has left the Warren County Sheriff's Department in shock. Weatherly is remembered as an exceptional officer, who was promoted to detective after only eight months with the department. "He was a very good officer," Williams said. "He was very well liked in the community. I did his background personally for his employment, and I did not find a bad comment or report from anybody." Residents of the quiet, rural farming community are also shocked. "This is the first time this has ever happened in this little town. I can't believe it myself," says Marshall Rawles. "As soon as I walked in here this morning, there was just people crying everywhere," says minister Dennis Retzlaff. "The people who knew him best were, of course, devastated." Weatherly is a former Wildlife Resources Officer, and he had only been with the Warren County Sheriff's Department for about 15 months. One month ago today, Sgt. Tonya Gillikin was killed in the line of duty. Gillikin worked for the Enfield, N.C., Police Department. (This is county next to Warren County)

A Chandler police SWAT team officer storming an apartment complex to arrest suspects in a jewelry heist was fatally wounded Friday before fellow officers killed one of the suspects with return fire. Officer Jim Snedigar, 38, is Chandler's first to be killed in the line of duty. He is also the second Valley officer shot to death in the past three weeks. Police took two other men into custody a short time after the 3 p.m. shootout at a gated apartment complex where the robbery suspects had fled after a 2-mile car chase from Tempe. Pursuing officers fanned out and, upon finding a broken arcadia door at one of the units, called in the Chandler SWAT team as residents were individually telephoned and ordered to stay inside. The officers tossed stun grenades into the apartment and were starting in when they were met by gunfire. Snedigar, who was wearing body armor, fell just inside the apartment, police said. Authorities had no identity on the dead suspect, who also wore a bulletproof vest. A former Army paratrooper, Snedigar was a member of the bicycle squad who volunteered for SWAT detail on occasion, a co-worker said. He left behind a wife and two young children. "He was a hard charger, he didn't like to sit on his behind," said Chandler Officer Eddie Cuthbertson, 30, a five-year veteran. "I remember he used to tell me, 'What are you sitting down for? There's criminals out there. Let's go put them in jail.' " His death is "like someone just ripped your heart out of you," Cuthbertson said.

March 19: Tempe Sgt. John Schaper and Officer Chuck Bridges were shot by a man who jumped out of a pickup truck and opened fire. Schaper was critically injured but Bridges was shot in his bulletproof vest and escaped serious injury. The gunman, Brian K. Ball, was killed in the exchange.
