Introduction: Introduction of self, background and experience. One out of four women in this country will suffer some kind of violence at the hands of a husband or boy friend. Very few will tell anyone. Victims of Domestic Violence come from all walks of life. They share feelings of helplessness, isolation, guilt, fear and shame. Body: I. Types of Domestic Violence A. Emotional: this type of violence can be 1. Ridicule 2. Constant Accusing 3. Never being good enough 4. Destroy self-esteem B. Physical: this type of violence can be 1. Hit 2. Punch 3. Slap 4. Kick 5. Bite 6. Forced sexual contact This list is not all inclusive and other areas may apply. Punishment is not violence when it is not taken to an extreme, being sent to your room, time outs are forms of non-violent punishment for children. Parents are given this privilege. But grown adults are not give that ability in a relationship with another consenting adult. Attempts usually lead to a violation of the law. II. Definition of Domestic Violence - in the State of Arkansas A. You must have or are currently cohabiting. Everything else is considered under separate laws. Do not ignore this problem. It will not go away on its own. B. People that commit these acts of violence need to seek help. III. Victims need to be given as much information as possible to give them a way out A. Resources at their disposal: 1. Friends 2. Domestic Violence Hot Line 3. Police 4. The Court System 5. Protection Order 6. School Counselor 7. Teacher 8. School Resource Officer 9. Go to a shelter 10. Seek medical help B. Make a plan 1. How to deal with this problem should it occur or reoccur C. Most abusers are able to do what they do because of secrecy D. Once exposed, things will change. Usually for the better. Review: 1. Remember, if you are a victim it is not your fault. 2. These acts of violence are against the law. 3. You don't have to live this way. 4. There are people out there that can help. 5. Girls, remember if you have a boy friend that forces you to do anything, he is not your friend.
